May 6th video shows the Roman World in the days immediately before St. Paul and others began spreading Christianity throughout the Empire. "Roman Law" made the Once-Wide World Into an expanded City State, full of Greek Architecture, Statuary, Art, Education and Philosophy. The May 13th video will concentrate on this development. Free. A SHAKESPEARE CELEBRATION Wednesdays, thru – May 7th 1:00 - 3:00pm Instructor: Lloyd King, DE Humanities Forum The impact of his 37 plays and 154 sonnets on the English Language was enormous. We will celebrate the year 1599 (he was 35) in Shakespeare’s life, this is when he acquired part ownership of the Globe Theatre and wrote four immortal plays. In the May series we will look at, an Overview of America, giving the basic foundations of our political and economic systems; how shall we invest in these troubling times –Real Estate? Stocks? THE DEATH PENALTY DEBATED Thursday, May 8th Presenter: Samuel Hoff, DE Humanities Forum This presentation covers the history of capital punishment in the United States, current methods of execution and the arguments for and against the practice. The discussion includes the matter by which the death penalty has been used in Delaware. The impact of recent court decisions on the death penalty will be reviewed and assessed. This program is sponsored in part by Delaware Humanities Forum. FOLK ART & CULTURE Tuesday, June 10th Presenter: Eunice LaFate, DE Humanities Forum Folk art is the art produced by self-taught people. Every culture has its share of folk artists, yet art historians often deny folk art its rightful place alongside fine art. Ms. LaFate, a Jamaican born prize-winning folk artist, addresses this issue and explores the concepts of folk art and culture. Audience members will have the opportunity to create their own folk art! LET’S BE BIBLICAL SCHOLARS Tuesdays, May 13th - 27th 10:00 am Instructor: Frank Dilley, Professor Emeritus, University of Delaware In this class we will look through passages in the first books of the Bible and using the creation stories, the flood stories and the various covenants with Moses, we will see how it was put together. The tour is guided by Prof. Richard Brettell, PhD (Yale). The first program will feature paintings by Reubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Franz Hals and other Dutch and Flemish artists. Join hundreds of thousands of Americans who each year use the Great Decisions Course to gain a better understanding of global topics affecting America’s role in the world and policymakers responses. This year the Foreign Policy Association has selected the following topics for discussions; Irag: Endgame, The European Union at 50, Talking to our Enemies, Russia, US Defense and Security Policy, Latin America: Shift to the Left?, US – China Trade Policy, and Private Philanthropy.
